I am not a morning person. I do drink coffee but I find having a healthy breakfast is usually what gives me the most energy. I have been starting my day with this lil gem lately and I love how refreshing it is, how much energy it gives me and how you can’t taste the kale or spinach at all.
Morning Milkshake
1/2 cup 100% orange juice
1/2 filtered water
1 handful of baby kale
1 handful of baby spinach
1 table spoon of goji berries
1 cup of frozen mixed berries (blueberries and raspberries)
1/2 table spoon of bee pollen
1/2 table spoon of honey
1/3 cup of greek yogurt
1 table spoon of chia seeds
Combine all the ingredients EXCEPT the chia seeds into blender (I use my Vitamix) for pulse for 2-3 minutes. The mixture will be thick like a milkshake. Top with chia seeds and eat with spoon (or add more OJ or water if you want it to be less thick to drink on the go.)
Orange Juice: Yes fruit has sugar, but so do any, many other things. I love orange juice because of the obvious vitamin C benefits. Vitamin C helps reduce stress, is an antioxidant, boots energy, helps keep our eyes nice and healthy and is great for your skin. I really love it in this because it adds that little bit of zing to the shake.
Kale: Kale is also rich in Vitamin C along with it’s friend Vitamin K and Vitamin A. It also has cancer fighting agents.
Spinach: Spinach is a great source of iron, which I love since I rarely eat meat. It also is great for your bones, brain and nervous function.
Goji berries: Studies have shown that people has felt more overall mental well being when they ingest dried goji berries. The effect of them also have been proven to calm symptoms of stress. (invest in buying some on Amazon or at Whole Foods)
Blueberries: Blueberries have been shown to reduce belly fat, prevent UTI’s, improve memory, slow signs of aging and are a natural anti-depressant.
Raspberries: Raspberries are rich in copper which help produce red blood cells. They also have been shown to help with cramps during woman’s menstrual cycle and prevent blood sugar level spikes for people with diabetes.
Bee pollen and honey: Bee pollen and honey are great as an energy booster. Also if you can obtain local honey or bee pollen it has been shown that ingesting local honey/pollen can help you fight off local pollen allergies.
Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt is a solid source of protein. I love this because, once again, I don’t eat a lot of meat. The yogurt help keeps me full until lunch time and curb cravings for sweets or starchy carbs. Greek yogurt has also been shown to help with digestive health. I am actually lactose intolerant but I find my stomach being able to easily digest 0% fat, plain Greek yogurt.
Chia Seeds: Chia seeds help balance blood sugar levels as well as add Omega-3 to your diet.
